Break Out The Beans

Cuban Black Beans

Everyone knows that beans are a great option for packing a nutritional punch, but they can get old quick. Try adding a little Cuban flavor for your old standby!

beans portion size me

Ingredients
1 pkg dry black beans
4 servings ham
1 onion, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
4 cloves of garlic
Dash of cumin
Salt and pepper
Fresh cilantro, chopped
Hot sauce

Directions
Cook the beans according to package directions. If you can, throw some ham bone in the water to cook with them to make the beans extra good. In the meantime, brown the ham with the onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Add cumin, salt, and pepper to taste. Serve with cilantro and hot sauce over rice.

MARSHALL SAYS

Green bell peppers aren’t my favorite, but they taste really good in this recipe. I also like the flavor of the cilantro mixed in.

MOM SAYS

I usually make this dish in the days after I’ve cooked a whole ham. It’s a great way to use up all the leftovers, including the bone. You could also use ham steaks or any other ham that’s available at a price that matches your budget.
